moon
Yesterday's block and today's are closely related to this block - they are the parts that make the character for tomorrow. Sun. Moon. I think so anyway.

RE Inspired
The past year+ has been a little overwhelming, both good and bad. The good being the all the many projects that I've been involved with and Lex getting into and starting at RISD. The bad being a death in the family and the subsequent legal/estate/whatever stuff that followed. All of that prevented me from my usual exhibiting routine. I'm just now finally getting back into the swing exhibition-wise, and to start it off, the appropriately titled RE Inspired, at the Mills Pond House Gallery, in St. James, NY.

happy birthday Sandy
So. I started the Calderations because of last week's summer camp Calder day. I continued because I wanted to get to today, July 22, which is Alexander Calder's (and, coincidentally, my sister's) birthday. So today's block is a portrait of Mr. Calder.
p.s. all the recent prints were made using Inovart Printfoam.

Art in the Courtyard
Alright, alright. This coming weekend, I'll be at the Lowell Folk Festival (Lowell, MA), exhibiting and selling fiber art, jewelry and prints. I'll also have copies of my book (Art Quilt Workbook) and the just released dvd (Jane Davila and Elin Waterston Teach You Art Quilting Basics). If you're in the neighborhood, please come see me.

Hopi, Navajo and Calder
So it was the last day of this week of camp. The morning crowd painted their Kachinas and then they did some Navajo style weaving.
The famous artist of the day (for the afternoon campers) was Alexander Calder, who happens to be the inventor of the mobile. The kids made wire sculptures in the style of Cirque Calder.
thank you all my wonderful students...

Kachinas and Cornell
Today's summer camp update:
The morning campers printed their Adinkra symbols on paper and fabric...
... then started a new project - Hopi Kachina dolls.
The afternoon gang finished their Giacomettis.
Then they moved on to Joseph Cornell. They painted shadow boxes and collaged paper and found objects to create Cornell-esque boxed assemblages.
Thus far, I've neglected to mention that the students also do drawing and painting (in addition to the camp theme projects). Here's a painting from one of this week's camp students.
peace.

Adinkra and Giacometti (plus a little from yesterday)
Yo my homies. Today my morning campers finished their Daruma Dolls that they started yesterday.
Later they made Adinkra symbol stamps. We ran out of time to do any stamping, so they'll do that tomorrow.
In the afternoon, we made sculptures in the style of Alberto Giacometti. They're aluminum foil armature built up with paper mache (or as one student called it "gooper mache"). I'll post pictures tomorrow after they're painted.
more to come...

I could have loved you like a planet
I tried to make a Jackson Pollock type block (in honor of today's camp), by drizzling hot glue onto corregated cardboard, but it sooooo didn't work. So in it's place, I made another mod, psychedelic swirly-whirly.
but it really doesn't matter at all
no it really doesn't matter at all
life's a gas, I hope it's gonna last
Darumas and Expressionism
Alrighty. This morning we made paper mache Daruma Dolls. They weren't dry enough to paint today, so at the moment they just look like rocks. Tomorrow it'll make more sense...
The afternoon camp was all about Abstract Expressionism, specifically Jackson Pollock.
