I looked up Melanie's seafaring uncle's tatoo thing - a pig on one foot and a rooster on the other. Apparently, some superstitious sailors believe that since both these animals fear water, having their images tatooed on one's feet will keep said feet from going under water and get them back on dry land (where I guess the pig and the rooster will be happier and will say "whew, that was a close one!").
